Artist's Comments

The back-cover piece I was asked to do to accompany this [link] (go check that one if you're curious about the commission/purpose of the pic). The figure is Mr. Slayer, the head of SLA Industries, looking out over the skyline of Mort. My favourite part of this image is a faint detail that most folk probably won't even notice.

This was quite a quick piece - maybe about 4/5 hours (that's quick for me, ok ;P). I used a lot of photoshop tricks & cheats to get it to work, but I think it came off okay, overall. Original planning sketch on paper, but everything you see was done in photoshop. Well, with maybe a little help from Google, and some priveleged source from a certain recent destruction of my childhood. ;D

[EDIT] - niether this peice or the other part of the commission were ever used for the fan-supplement they were intended for, but as I did them as a favour for a friend, I wasn't that bothered. However, last night I found out that this image was used as the endpiece in the most recent *official* SLA book, Cannibal Sector 1. Actual artwork in an actual SLA book - that was my dream not so many years ago! Just wish he'd told me what he wanted it for in the first place, and I might have tidied it up a bit!

This has a really good atmosphere, cool piece

It doesn't matter how good you are. What is important is that you keep always improving.
:iconartmunki:
Thanks a lot - atmosphere is *everything* on Mort

that's very deep. Very elaborate. I love black and white. Best kind of art! Great work. Love all your art!

Thanks a lot for that. The b&w thing was really just a requirement of the comission, but I really quite enjoyed working like that, so I don't expect it'll be my last attempt. Just wait til I get my new PC sorted out!!

Oh, and thanks for the fav on my wee card/design thing too. Much appreciated!

The buildings were actually mostly cheated. I was commissioned quite late to do this piece (and the other b&w image for the front cover of the book), so I didn't have time to detail a full cityscape. Instead I borrowed liberally from a couple of image sources to get images of skyscrapers lit up at night, and used a bit of photoshop know-how (mostly careful selection, skewing and blurring) to make them all seem to fit together. There are a few bits I'm still not quite happy with, that I should've done more work on, but the time just wasn't there.

thanks for the comment!
